Thomas MacDonagh/Tomás Mac Donnchada (1878-1916). Born in Cloughjordan, Tipperary, MacDonagh was a student at Coláiste na Mumhan in 1906. Liam de Róiste tells us that he ‘came to the Colaisde from St. Colman’s College, Fermoy where he was a Professor’.
He was a political activist, poet, playwright, educationalist and revolutionary leader and had been a pupil of Eibhlín ní Chróinín (who also taught at Coláiste na Mumhan) in Kilkenny in 1901.
He was one of the seven leaders of the Easter Rising of 1916, a signatory of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic and Commandant of the 2nd Battalion, Dublin Brigade of the Irish Volunteers, which fought at Jacob’s biscuit factory.
He was executed for his part in the Rising at the age of 38.
